Originally started by Sheila and Jeff Cotton in June of 2005,
bringing Cedarville its first Internet cafe. They saw a need in the community for a coffeehouse
with fresh food and friendly atmosphere. Along with espresso, good wine and beer, they served a panini sandwich, two salads and their famous deviled eggs. The Cottons previously owned Big Ed's in Reno, NV and Rancho Nevada in Verdi, NV. After selling the Surprise!, they went on to open Surprise Valley's only community radio, KDUP and Giddy Up Scoop shop.

S! Story
The summer of 2005 Adrien Kelly Mefford moved
from Arcata California to Surprise Valley to join her
partner Joshua
on his family ranch. Adrien was raised with her
grandmother's mastery of classics and her mother's
creativeness in the kitchen. Combined with a life time
of experience with food, from fine dinning of the North
coast of California, to the smoke-filled bars of Western
Spain, she shares her love of food with staff and
customers. The previous owners; Sheila and Jeff Cotton
hired Adrien in 2005. Three years later,
Adrien and Josh bought the Surprise!Cafe. With a
philosophy of fresh food & friendly
atmosphere, Adrien and Josh have built the Cafe into a
local institution and community hub. From Saturday
morning waffles to Lasagna dinners, seasonal soups, and
custom coffee drinks, you can find family recipes each
day of the week. Josh
and Adrien
coordinate a Farmer's Market on the front steps of
Surprise!every Saturday during the growing season as
well as other community events, such as; Wine & Beer
tastings, poetry readings, live music, Spring seed swap,
and Surprise! annual New Years Dinner. The Cafe
bakes everything from scratch! From deserts to
sandwiches you can also find fresh,
family-recipe-breads. The cafe bakes their own bagels,
sandwich
rolls, focaccia
bread, pizzas, waffles, quiche and lots of desserts.
